M.R. VASKO, L.E. DOMINO and E.F. DOMINO, Differential effects of d-amphetamine on brain acetylcholine in young, adult and geriatric rats, European J. Pharmacol. 27 (1974) 145-147. Varying doses of d-amphetamine were given i.p. to young (28 day old), adult (approximately 90 day old), and geriatric rats (approximately 2 years old). 30 min after injection, rats were sacrificed and ACH extracted and assayed by pyrolysis gas-liquid chromatography. Total brain acetylcholine (ACh) levels were not significantly different among the control animals in all three groups, d-Amphetamine, however, decreased total levels of ACh in young and geriatric rats without changing levels in adult animals. The changes in young rats were dose-related. These results suggest an important difference in brain cholinergic mechanisms depending upon age.

Differential Effects of Resveratrol on the Expression of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Transcripts and Protein in the Hippocampus of Rat Brain
Background: The induction of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in the hippocampus has shown to play a role in the beneficial effects of resveratrol (RSV) on the learning and memory. The BDNF gene has a complicated structure with eight 5’ noncoding exons (I-IXa), each of which can splice to a common coding exon (IX) to form a functional transcript. Estrogens increase levels of ...

متن کاملRecovery from GABA-mediated hemiplegia in young and aged rats: effects of catecholaminergic manipulations.
We investigated the participation of catecholaminergic mechanisms in the functional recovery from motor cortex lesions in young (9 months) and aged (26 months) rats. The animals were studied during the recovery period from an hemiplegic syndrome secondary to small motor cortex lesions potentiated by the localized, chronic (7 days) infusion of GABA into the lesion site. Acute administration of h...
متن کاملThe Effect of Intrahippocampal Injection of Ascorbic Asid on Spatial Learning and Memory in Adult Male Rats
Introduction: Ascorbic acid (AA) is present in high concentrations with heterogeneous distribution in the mammalian brain. Previous studies have shown that release of various neurotransmitters such as glutamate, acetylcholine and dopamine might be involved in the central AA release. On the other hand all of these neurotransmitters and the region CA1 of the hippocampus are involved in learnin...
